Presenting the AUP 2023 Faculty Achievement Brochure

Home>News>

At the American University of Paris, our faculty members are dedicated educators and global professionals whose impact extends far beyond the classroom. We are excited to announce the release of the 2023 Faculty Achievement Brochure (FAB) which not only highlights the outstanding teaching our faculty provides but also showcases their extensive contributions to the global corpus of research and academic discourse.

As expressed in Provost Hannah Westley’s foreword, this broad body of work by the teachers within our ranks “interrogates some of the most pressing issues in their fields today” through scholarly monographs, peer-reviewed articles, creative projects and more. In addition to their individual research, AUP faculty work collectively to organize workshops, conferences, exhibitions and talks, both locally and internationally, contributing to a vibrant academic culture our students carry with them well beyond campus and into their future careers.

A Year of Achievement on a Global Scale

In 2023, AUP professors were actively engaged in producing new knowledge, often tackling complex, contemporary issues. Some have built a reputation as creators and curators of art, contributing to public dialogue through commentaries, reviews, and creative works, while others have worked to broaden and deepen intellectual communities across borders, receiving grants to travel and engage with other experts in their fields. Their contributions to ongoing conversations in politics, literature, science and the arts have been published by media institutions such as Le Monde, the Times Literary Supplement, the Wall Street Journal and France24, and international peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of Evolutionary Biology, Theory & Psychology and the International Journal of Cultural Studies.

As a globally-oriented educational institution, AUP’s faculty output addresses issues that resonate beyond academic circles, contributing to broader societal debates on topics like environmental sustainability, social justice, and technological innovation. As a result, our faculty achievements can reach far and wide and make a real-world impact, influencing not only academic peers but also policymakers, industry leaders and the general public.

2023 was also a year for recognizing Emeriti professors. In addition to featuring their contributions in the FAB for the first time, AUP also launched the Emeriti Board to represent the interests of all retired AUP colleagues (faculty and staff). Indeed, retirement from teaching does not mean retirement from scholarly life, and their inclusion helps recognize the lasting impact they continue to make.

AUP’s Commitment to Teaching and Research

While the FAB celebrates the research and academic contributions of AUP’s faculty, it also underscores their commitment to teaching and mentoring. In addition to publications and conferences, the achievements listed in the brochure reflect a deep engagement with students both inside and outside the classroom, whether it be by starting podcasts, helping students prepare to present at international conferences, leading real-world client-facing consulting projects or planning and accompanying a full calendar of study trips. This collaboration between faculty and students is central to the AUP experience, blending research and pedagogy in a way that enriches both.

The Faculty Achievement Brochure is an important part of AUP’s tradition, recognizing the extraordinary work of our faculty and celebrating their contributions to both the university and the wider world. The brochure is a reminder that AUP professors are not only exceptional teachers but also influential researchers, creators and leaders in their own right.

We invite you to explore the 2023 FAB and discover the many ways our faculty are making a difference.
