The State of the World in 2020: The End of American Leadership?

On Thursday, September 19, 2019, The American University of Paris held a roundtable talk, in partnership with French publishing house Éditions La Découverte, to mark the launch of the latest edition of L’état du monde, entitled “L’état du monde 2020: fin du leadership américain?” The book of essays focuses on the question of American leadership today as compared to the postwar period, discussing the scope of modern US hegemony across militaristic, political, diplomatic, commercial, economic, scientific and cultural spheres.

The roundtable was moderated by Professor Philip Golub of AUP’s Department of International and Comparative Politics. The attending panel was made up of the book’s two editors – Bertrand Badie of Sciences Po Paris and Dominique Vidal, a journalist and historian – as well as Annick Cizel from Université Sorbonne Nouvelle – Paris III; Bernard Hourcade, a specialist in the Geography of Iran from the French national center for scientific research, CNRS; and Pierre Mélandri, a historian and former professor at Sciences Po. They outlined the current state of US dominance in a complex world in which borders and resources are being redistributed at an alarming rate.

Le jeudi 19 septembre 2019, the American university of Paris a organisé une table ronde, en partenariat avec les éditions françaises Les Éditions La Découverte, pour marquer le lancement du dernier numéro de L'état du monde intitulé «L'état du monde 2020: fin du leadership américain? » Le recueil d'essais est axé sur la question du leadership américain aujourd'hui par rapport à l'après-guerre et aborde l'ampleur de l'hégémonie américaine moderne dans les sphères militaire, politique, diplomatique, commerciale, économique, scientifique et culturelle.

La table ronde a été animée par le professeur Philip Golub du département de politique internationale et comparée de AUP. Le panel de la table ronde était composé des deux rédacteurs du livre - Bertrand Badie de Sciences Po Paris et Dominique Vidal, journaliste et historien - ainsi que d'Annick Cizel de l'Université Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris III ; Bernard Hourcade, spécialiste de la géographie de l'Iran du CNRS ; et Pierre Mélandri, historien et professeur émérite à Sciences Po. Ils ont présenté l'état actuel de la domination américaine dans un monde complexe dans lequel les frontières et les ressources sont redistribuées à un rythme alarmant.
