Bypassing Democracy: Understanding the Financial Leverage of the Paris Club of Creditors

Q-609, 6 rue du Colonel Combes
Monday, April 8, 2024 - 18:30

The Center for Critical Democracy Studies presents: Bypassing Democracy: Understanding the Financial Leveage of the Paris Credit Club by Sven van Mourik.

Having received his Ph.D. in economic history from New York University, Sven van Mourik investigates the globalization of IMF and World Bank structural adjustment programs. Specifically, he writes and researches on the financial leverage through which these programs spread: countries who refused to accept reforms faced a loss of sovereign creditworthiness, ostracism from global markets, and de facto economic collapse.

Central to this financial technology of rule –which gained renewed relevance in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic– is the little-known Paris Club of official creditors, which he is currently investigating. He has previously presented on this topic at the European University Institute, the University of Vienna, and the Japanese Society for the History of Economic Thought.
