AH 2012: Medieval Art & Architecture
Professor Anna Russakoff
Cost: €90 (includes round-trip train transportation, guided visits, entrance fees, and VAT)
Descendants of the Vikings, the Normans became a dominant force in Europe 11th and 12th centuries. This trip focuses on the reign of William the Conqueror, who became Duke of Normandy at age seven. William the Conqueror is perhaps best known for his triumph at the battle of Hastings of 1066 which is recounted in the Bayeux Tapestry. Visit the tapestry that contains a rich visual narrative that continues for 77 yards. Its main events feature boat building, sailing across the Channel, and episodes from the Battle of Hastings. In Caen, visit William the Conqueror’s Castle and the two monastic communities he founded: the Abbaye-aux-Hommes, dedicated to St.-Etienne, and the Abbaye-aux-Dames, dedicated to the Trinity.
Before returning to Paris, spend some time exploring the town center of Caen, and maybe even purchase some Norman apple cider to bring home with you. Plan to arrive in Paris in time for a late dinner
Last day to register/cancel: January 25
Late cancelation fee: €90
Payment for study trips is due as soon as the trip is officially confirmed by email adangaup.edu (from the CP Coordinator, Alexis Dang).
