Join the AUP community and Gina Werfel at the finissage of her exhibition "Recollections" in the Combes Gallery on Monday, October 9th from 18h00 to 20h30. Meet the artist and share a glass of wine with your colleagues and friends.
Gina Werfel's paintings combine multiple independent "voices" or sources. Fragments float in fluid, veiled spaces, broken by gestural brush marks that respond to memories, or to glimpses from her studio. Inspired by a stay in Singapore in 2015, where she taught at Yale-NUS College, Werfel has enhanced the lightness and transparency of her new works through collage and spray-painted stencils; she also incorporated the spatial complexity of Baroque ceiling paintings, which she studied while a Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome last spring.
Trained at Columbia University, the New York Studio School and Hamilton College, Werfel has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, most recently at the Prince Street Gallery in New York City and Elizabeth Moss Gallery in Falmouth, ME. Werfel has been awarded residencies at the American Academy in Rome, the Rockefeller Foundation's Bellagio Center in Italy, the Djerassi Foundation in California, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Yosemite National Park. Werfel is Professor of Art at the University of California, Davis. She is currently working on a public art commission for McKinley Village in Sacramento.
