Leadership of The American University of Paris (AUP) works closely together to advance the University's mission and achieve its strategic vision.
The President represents the University to all its constituencies, including the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni, families, friends and partners. The President also takes the lead in articulating the strategic vision and setting goals for institutional performance, working closely with the senior team. President Sonya Stephens took on the role in September 2022, succeeding former President Celeste Schenck. Professor Stephens is an exceptional academic leader and internationally recognized scholar of 19th century French literature. She has long devoted herself to advancing liberal arts education and is a highly skilled administrator, fundraiser, academic and community builder in the context of higher education.
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the University, setting direction and policy, and monitoring performance. It oversees execution of the strategic plan, makes decisions about appointments and investments, and holds overall fiduciary responsibility.
AUP’s six officers are members of the President’s Leadership Team and manage AUP’s administrative functions. Within each of their areas of responsibility – Academic Affairs; Finance and Administration; Student Services; Enrollment Management; IT Services; and Outreach, Advancement and Communications – these senior administrators work to execute the University’s strategic goals and initiatives. They bring years of professional experience to their roles.
