On this trip students visit two important museums in Bordeaux: the Musée des Beaux Arts, whose holdings include portraits by Renaissance and later masters, and the CAPC collection of contemporary art. Unesco named Bordeaux a World Heritage Site for its beautiful architecture and urban planning, but also because of its rich cultural legacy. The city’s most famous son, Michel de Montaigne, invented the personal essay as a literary form and even served as mayor from 1581 to 1585. We visit the château where he did most of his writing, and take another excursion to a vineyard in the surrounding wine country. Other activities include writing and discussions, which, like our stops at museums and sites of historical importance, are designed to complement the Firstbridge courses Autobiographical Writing
(where Montaigne’s essays are studied) and Writing about one’s Art – Artists’ Statements (where artists’ statements about their art is discussed).
