By invitation of the Center for Writers & Translators, Maureen Freely will present her recent cahier, Angry in Piraeus, in which she explores what it was in her childhood that led her to become a translator, a traveller across the spaces that exist between countries, languages, forms. She details how she went from being a novelist to being Orhan Pamuk’s translator; why too it was necessary for her at one point to cease to be his translator and return to her own fictional worlds.
Maureen Freely was born in the US but grew up in Turkey. She is a professor at the University of Warwick, and currently the President of English PEN. She may be best known for her translations of five books by the Turkish novelist and Nobel Laureate, Orhan Pamuk. Her sixth novel, Enlightenment (2007), covers some of the same ground. Like her seventh novel, Sailing through Byzantium (2013), it was deeply influenced by her work in translation.
