On Saturday, begin this trip to the Loire Valley — where French kings, queens and their courts resided during long periods of the 15th and 16th centuries— by visiting the castle of Amboise before travelling to the town of Loches to see the remnants of one of the earliest French castles as well as structures designed for King Charles VII’s mistresses Agnès Sorel and Anne of Brittany. Continue to Thouars to visit a superb flamboyant chapel. After spending the night in Chinon, top off the trip with Sunday visits to the Renaissance chapel of Champigny-sur-Veude and the masterworks of Azay-le-Rideau and Chenonceau, the latter expanded first by Henri II’s mistress Diane de Poitiers and then by Queen Catherine de’ Medici. On Monday, proceed to the lovely medieval town of Blois and visit the impressive castle which was the seat of the court of King Louis XII and Queen Anne of Brittany. Plan to return Monday evening to Paris.
