Networking Online and Off:

“It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” Internet adage

Have you ever gotten a job because someone you knew recommended you, told you about the opportunity, or actually hired you? That is your network in action. Of course, once you’re in, it’s up to you to show your talent and drive. But your contacts—and the contacts of your contacts--can help you get in the door in the first place.

So how do you do build and maintain your network?

The AUP network is an amazing group of extraordinary individuals located all around the globe. On January 30, the Careers Committee of the AUP Graduate Student Council will be hosting the World in 2019 Gala event and several dozen alumni and outside professionals are expected. This is just one of many opportunities to meet some members of the AUP community and beyond who may be in fields of interest to you. Because networking doesn’t just happen at allotted times. It also happens on flights, in the classroom, and in many other informal contexts.

In anticipation of this and other occasions to grow your network, this brown bag lunch facilitated by Director of Career Advising Danielle Savage is a chance to chat about your specific networking style, what you feel works for you (and what doesn’t), what you can expect to get out of networking situations, whether or not you need an “elevator pitch” and where you feel you could grow your skills. You will walk away with tips on how you can build and leverage your professional network.
