On the evening of Thursday, September 26, 2019, the AUP Fine Arts Gallery hosted Taiwanese fashion designer Sophie Hong for a vernissage of her latest exhibition, Dualities. The event was attended by members of the public and the AUP community, as well as VIP invitees including the Taiwanese ambassador to France.
Sophie Hong’s fashion brand seeks to preserve natural resources and a variety of human values, from culture and education to the aesthetics of everyday life. Every piece of clothing is made of natural fabrics and dyes. For Hong, fashion is all about being practical, comfortable and elegant.
Her work is a fusion of East and West, combining Western sculpture practices with Eastern colors and fabrics. She seeks to promote clothing that is international, high-quality and handmade in Taiwan, while preserving and promoting the craft of natural dyeing. Her work has been included in the permanent collection of the Musée de la Mode at the Palais Galliera in Paris. In 2014, she was awarded the “Golden Pin Design Award” for best Asian design for her own creation, “Hong Silk.”
The newly expanded AUP Fine Arts Gallery now extends from the Combes Student Life Center along the glass atrium of the Quai d’Orsay Learning Commons. The gallery hosts new exhibitions every three weeks, showcasing the work of both professional artists and members of the AUP community.
