Ethical Use of Digital Archives

Friday, May 17, 2024 - 16:00 to 18:00

As the capabilities of digital technology increase, so do the number and complexity of digital archives that collect and preserve testimonies from witnesses of mass violence. These simultaneous developments give rise to many questions for archivists, researchers, policy makers, and curators. Victims of mass violence are particularly vulnerable to the uncontrolled dissemination of their testimonies. Protecting these archives from information misuse and cybercrime is extremely important.”

The first consultation for the establishment of guidelines for the ethical use of digital archives took place in May 2024. This group intends to continue their work in the Fall 2024, with the aim of creating a structured guideline for digital archives.

This working group is co-organized and led by AUP professors Claudia Roda and Susan Perry, UNESCO Chair in Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights.
