The recent recognition of the bodies of work of French sculptress Camille Claudel, of French painter Séraphine de Senlis, and of Swiss-born Aloïse Corbaz, are testimonies of a drastic evolution in the way we view women’s contributions to art history and culture in France. Furthermore, the new interest for and legitimization of psychiatric art and Art brut (Outsider Art)have created interesting links between mental health and imagination and developed art therapy. Thus, not only has the social gaze drastically changed its judgment of women, but the borders between madness and reason, “Art brut” and “official Art” have appeared closer to each other.Visit the world’s largest collection of Art Brut (Outsider Art), and question your views of art, your judgement on mental health and intricate artists’ personalities, in particular that of Aloïse Corbaz.
