Dear all,
We’re saddened by the recent attack in Atlanta that killed eight people, six of whom were Asian or Asian American women. Since the beginning of the pandemic, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. have faced a rise in harassment and violence. We want to show our solidarity and compassion to the families of the victims:
We hope the AUP community will join us in mourning their lives. Journalists on the ground are still gathering information about the attacks. For now, we encourage reflection on how race, gender, labor, migration, empire, and wartime legacies may shape the circumstances of the shooting.
While this attack occurred in the US last week, we also reflect on the Asian communities here in France since the beginning of the pandemic. We know that some of you have faced this prejudice while living here. Faculty, staff, and students have told us that they’ve been spat on or told to go back “home.” We want you to know that we’re here for you.
We can provide some initial resources to enrich conversations and advocate for Asian and Asian-American lives in the United States and France. Feel free to reach out to us at diversitycouncilaup.edu or during our office hours.
To the Asian and Asian American members of our community, we stand in solidarity with you and extend our support. To all, please do not hesitate to reach out to us; we’re here to talk, listen, and think through forms of action we can take together. We continue our dedication to make AUP an inclusive space for all and encourage all to engage in healthy dialogue.
In solidarity,
The Diversity Council
