Virtual Lab

To use vLab, you'll need to make sure you have the correct program installed on your computer:

• Systems running Windows 10/11 and macOS:
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection
    • Windows 10/11: This software is included with all Windows computers.
    • macOS: The software can be download from the Mac App Store by clicking here.  If you are using a Mac on the AUP campus, this software will already be installed.
• Systems running GNU/Linux:
  • Remmina
    • Information can be found here.

Once you are sure to have one of the programs listed above installed on your computer, click here to download the vLab.rdp file that will allow you to connect to the vLab.  If you are on a PC or Mac, move the file to an easy-to-access location, such as your Desktop.

• If you are using a Windows PC or a Mac:
  1. Double-click the vLab.rdp file that you previously downloaded.
  2. When you are asked for your credentials:
     1. For your username, enter your AUP NetID preceded by AUP\ in the format AUP\NetID.  For example, if your NetID were a123456, you would enter the username AUP\a123456
        • It is critical that you enter the backslash "\", not the forward-flash "/".
     2. For your password, enter your current AUP password, then press the Enter key to connect.
  3. That's it!  You should be connected to the vLab system.
  4. Next time you want to connect to the vLab, just repeat these steps by double-clicking on the vLab.rdp file.

• If you are using a GNU/Linux machine:
  1. In the main window of the Remmina application, open the File menu (it may show up as three horizontal lines, instead of the word "file"), select Import, and double-click on the vLab.rdp file that you downloaded.
  2. Right-click on the newly-created vlab.aup.edu entry, and choose Edit.
  3. In the Advanced tab:
     1. Change Gateway Transport Type to RPC.
     2. At the bottom of the page, check the box Use base credentials for gateway too.
     3. Click on Save.
  4. To connect, double-click on the profile name vlab.aup.edu.
     1. In the Username field, enter your AUP NetID only.  For example, if your NetID is a123456, enter exactly a123456
     2. In the Password field, enter your current AUP password.
     3. In the Domain field, enter AUP
     4.  Click OK.  You'll be connected to the vLab system!
  5. The next time you want to connect to the vLab, just double-click the vlab.aup.edu profile, enter your credentials, and click OK.

The first time you connect to vLab, a window will open asking you to enter your AUP e-mail address.  This allows you to connect the vLab to your AUP OneDrive storage.

1. Please enter your AUP e-mail address, such as a123456aup.edu then click Next.
2. Enter your AUP password, then click Sign In.
3. If you see any checkboxes labelled Don't ask again for XX days, make sure to check the checkbox.
4. When asked to Stay signed in?, choose Yes.

Once you have completed the steps listed above ("Connecting to vLab for the first time"), you should be able to access your AUP OneDrive online storage by double-clicking the OneDrive Storage icon on the vLab's desktop.  Please make sure to save all files in the OneDrive storage.  You can access files that you save in the OneDrive storage on other computers using a web browser by clicking here.

The vLab allows you to print be selecting the printer called AUPrint.  After printing, you can use your AUP ID card to access your files at any of the large printers/copiers on campus.

When you cut or copy a file in the vLab, you should be able to Paste it on your personal computer in a different window, and vice versa.  For example, if you have text that has been produced in the vLab, and you want to use it in a program on your own computer, you can select the text, Copy it by pressing the keys Ctrl-C or Cmd-C, then Paste it into a text editor in your computer on your computer such as Microsoft Word or Pages.

If you disconnect from the vLab for more than 15 minutes, or are inactive for an extended period, you will be signed out from the vLab.  To avoid losing data, make sure to always save your work in progress.

When you are done using the vLab, please make sure to properly sign out by clicking on the Windows menu icon, clicking the little icon that looks like a person, then choosing Sign out.

If you're on-campus and having trouble using the vLab, the fastest way to get help is to come to the IT Services office, located in room Q-A201, between 9 AM and 6 PM.
